FAQ
Where do my files go?
Into a normal folder in your home folder. The fridge uses ~/Fridge, the drawer uses ~/Desktop Drawer, the mailbox uses ~/Mailbox, the vending machines use ~/Vending Machine and ~/Vending Machine Keypad. Right-click the object and choose the "Open ... Folder" item to see them in Finder.
Does it remember my files after a restart?
Yes. Each object keeps a small list of what it holds and where each file came from, so Put Back still works after you quit, restart or update.
If I quit or delete the app, are my files gone?
No. They stay in the folder above until you move them.
Why does macOS ask to let it control Finder?
To put a file's icon back in the exact spot it had on your desktop. If you say no, everything still works; Put Back just lets Finder choose the spot.
macOS says the app cannot be opened
The apps are not notarized by Apple yet. Double-click once and close the warning, then open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway.
Does it drain my battery?
No. When nobody is touching an object, it runs no timers and does no polling. Animation only runs while something moves.
How do I quit?
Right-click the object and choose Quit.
Windows or Linux?
The Desktop Fridge has a beta for Windows 10 and 11. Get the installer from the Desktop Fridge page. The other objects are macOS only for now and need macOS 14 or later. There is no Linux version.
Can I make my own object?
Yes. See CONTRIBUTING.md.
